How to Make Fake Money Feel Real (updated 2022)

Using fake money in your board game, RPG or LARP can be an awesome experience—but it won’t be much fun if it just looks like Monopoly money that you printed yourself. You want your fake money to have the right texture, weight and feel so that it works as part of the game. Here are some tips and tricks to add realism to your fake money props and make them feel real.

How to Make  Fake Money Feels Real (updated 2022)

There are a few simple things you can do to make your money look as realistic as possible. The goal is to create an illusion of currency rather than a replica. Use these tips to make crisp bills that seem real. If you want everyone you pass by thinking you’re rich, it will all start with how they view your cash, so focus on making each bill look like it was printed yesterday!

Embossing

Have you ever used a credit card? Have you ever felt it? Take a look at its edges. You’ll notice a distinct texture there. This is embossing, and it’s one of many ways to make money feel more authentic. To have an even greater effect, get multiple colours of ink or felt-tip pens so that you can differentiate various denominations of bills by hand – just like they do in reality!

Stamp/Print on front and back

One of the easiest ways to help your money look legitimate is by stamping it with an official government seal. This doesn’t mean that you have to spend hours on a handmade coat of arms; when you order from us, we’ll print a custom seal for you so all you have to do is show up with a stack of cash. (For more info, see our Seal Options page.)

Cut out specific denominations

You’ll want a stack of cash that looks like it’s made up of $10, $20, $50 and $100 bills. But don’t grab a random collection—the first thing people do when they look at counterfeit currency is check for inconsistencies in value. To make sure your cash stack looks realistic, but all of one type of bill in one stack. Mixing high denominations with low ones won’t be believable.

Put in pockets

Make it look like you have been walking around with a wallet full of cash. Here’s how; slip some bills into your back pocket as if they were already folded in half. Add more folded bills into other pockets, as well. This is a little trick that makes it look like you’ve got a fat wallet at all times. Wear clothes that are tight, such as jeans or pants that are in style right now.

Go all out with design paper

Pick up some design paper at a local craft store—it’s more expensive than regular computer paper, but will make your fake currency stand out. Once you’ve selected a style you like, print it on a colour printer.
