The award-winning Hope Scholarship Program by Washington State offers full tuition at state universities to high school seniors whose families earn less than $50,000 annually. If you’re one of the thousands of students who are eligible and you haven’t applied yet, it’s not too late! Here’s everything you need to know about how to apply for the Hope Scholarship and make college dreams come true without worrying about college debt.

What is The Hope Scholarship?

The Georgia Tuition Equalization Grant (also known as The Hope Scholarship) is a full-tuition scholarship that allows a student who earns less than $50,000 per year and has lived in Georgia for at least 12 months prior to high school graduation to attend any of its public institutions tuition-free. It’s one of two programs—the other being HOPE—that provide free college tuition in Georgia.

When does hope Scholarship start?

Applications start in September, but there are events throughout the year that you can attend. It’s worth going along to an event even if you don’t think you’re ready for applying just yet, as it gives you a chance to find out more about some of their other funding opportunities (not just scholarships) and meet current students from across all 5 campuses who can tell you more about what it’s like to study with us.

Hope Scholarship Eligibility

The North Carolina HOPE Scholarship is available to high school seniors, high school graduates, and GED holders who meet all of these criteria: The student must be an in-state resident; The student must attend a public or private institution accredited by one of four regional accrediting agencies; The student’s family income must not exceed $60,000 (with some exceptions); and The student must be enrolled full-time.

Hope Scholarship Requirements

Many Georgia families are required to pay expensive private school tuition. Fortunately, you may be eligible for help under a scholarship program known as Hope. Families can qualify if they meet income and other requirements set by state law. The latest version of Georgia’s Tax Free Scholarship is called Hope Scholarships, which went into effect in 2014, replacing Georgia Tuition Advantage. To be eligible, a family of four cannot earn more than $90,000 a year.

The value of all assets—from bank accounts and retirement funds to real estate holdings and vehicles—is also taken into account. For example, under 2018 scholarship requirements, a family can have up to $125,000 in countable assets. What are the additional criteria? In general, students must be graduating high school seniors, who have been accepted into an accredited college or university by December 31 of their senior year. In addition, a family’s gross income may not exceed $60,000.

There are two Hope Scholarships available through CHEAP—the regular scholarship and a renewable scholarship which has more stringent criteria.

How do I apply?

If you want to apply for a Hope scholarship, you will need to fill out an application through FAFSA.gov in addition to your high school’s own financial aid office.

If you don’t know how much money you should request through FAFSA, it is best to talk with a counselor at your high school.

What happens if I am accepted into hope Scholarship?

If you’re selected as a scholarship recipient, you will be expected to maintain a 2.75 GPA and enroll full-time in an accredited college or university upon graduating from high school. You will also be expected to write a thank-you letter about your experience as a scholarship recipient by December of your senior year.

In exchange, we will pay up to $250 per credit hour, up to $10,000 total. Keep in mind that if you accept our scholarship, you’ll need to meet your obligations as outlined above. If your GPA falls below 2.75 or you take less than a full-time course load, we may have to revoke your scholarship. And if you fail to write a thank-you letter within three months of graduating high school, we will revoke your scholarship as well.

Is there financial aid available with a Hope scholarship?

The simple answer is, no. However, you may be eligible for federal financial aid in addition to your Hope scholarship if you’re a low-income student. The key is to fill out your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Doing so will help determine your eligibility for federal grants and loans as well as scholarships and work-study programs at any school you choose. Also keep in mind that many schools also offer their own forms of financial aid and other merit-based awards.
